Depending upon what you have purchased, the policy either covers Liabilities to Third Parties only (called Compulsory Insurance) or Third Party + Damage to your car + Natural Calamities (STF) + Personal Accident (called the Comprehensive Cover). By law, it is compulsory to purchase the Third Party Liability cover but most persons would go for comprehensive or even a wider cover unless the vehicle is quite old. The standard wording in use is called the Unified Motor Insurance Policy (UMIP) which is the one prescribed by law in the Sultanate of Oman. However, it is common practice to offer various extensions to widen the cover and benefits. AXA has been in the forefront to offer the widest possible options at competitive prices.
The Capital Market Authority (CMA) has always taken new initiatives to safeguard the interests of the public and to remove ambiguity. Many important changes have been done – starting with the definitions, explaining the different covers, a very clear proposal form which customers are obliged to complete, many new options available to the customers to ensure transparency in the pricing.
AXA provides one of the highest levels of motor protection in the Middle East combined with the security and service standards of a large international organization and guaranteed repairs. If you are being offered insurance cover from another source at lower premium, it’s probably without some or many of these benefits.
Most common types of damages such as fire, lightning, accidents, collision, overturning, malicious acts, theft, Storm, Flood, Tempest are covered. Some perils, such as Strikes, Riots etc can be insured by paying an additional premium but some like War, Nuclear are simply uninsurable. AXA has provided different packages for customers to choose from {Compulsory (TPL); Compulsory (TPL) + Fire/Theft/Malicious Damage; Comprehensive, Perfect & Executive} with the aim of providing the cover that suits you. Also, there is a “pick & choose” option to add select covers to each of these packages.
This is the amount of each & every loss which you have to bear in case of a claim.
A number of factors are used to calculate your insurance premium. Amongst these factors are the age of the driver, length of driving experience, claims history, location, vehicle age, value and type.
As the insurance premium is affected by the profile of the driver, it is not possible to simply transfer insurance cover from one driver to another. The existing policy must be cancelled. A new data base needs to be created for the new owner who will be given a new insurance policy for the remaining period of the policy. However, we will not refuse to transfer, but the premium could be different to the new buyer.
NCD is No-Claim Discount. It is a reward to our clients for safe driving, normally by means of reduction in premium rate for having a good claims history and/or by an upgrade to a wider cover. If you are not yet our customer, then a letter from the previous insurer is needed to be eligible for the NCD. Protected no-claim discount is automatically included in our Executive policy and is available as an option in our Perfect policy. Under this facility, the NCD will not be affected as long as you have not made more than 2 claims during the last one year and the total claim amount does not exceed RO 500.
a. For a new car it is the actual purchase price. b. At the time of each insurance renewal, reduce the value by 15% for depreciation as per Ministry guidelines. c. For a second hand purchased vehicle, it will be the purchase cost or the market value and must be agreed with us if it differs from (b) above.
This depends on the type of Policy (Comprehensive, Perfect or Executive) you have selected. a. Under the Comprehensive Policy 1. For new vehicles, agency repair is allowed in the first year. 2. For older vehicles, ROP approved “A” grade garages from our panel are used. b. Under the Perfect Policy 1. For new vehicles, agency repair is allowed for first two years. 2. For older vehicles, ROP approved “A” grade garages from our panel are used. However, on payment of an additional premium and provided no claim has arisen in the previous year(s), agency repair can be granted for subsequent year(s) until you are eligible to move to the Executive policy. c. Under the Motor Executive policy, agency repair option is available for vehicles up to 5 years old.
If you have selected Agency Repairs, then your vehicle will be repaired at the vehicle’s authorized dealership. Otherwise, AXA will select one of its own authorized repairers.
AXA will select one of its authorized garages to repair your vehicle. However, we may agree to your vehicle being repaired at the workshop of your choice provided the cost is lower than the estimate from our authorized workshop. We would subsequently require proof that the vehicle was satisfactorily repaired and please remember that we will be unable to guarantee the repairs.
Your AXA policy automatically covers private cars when being driven off-road provided your car has 4 wheel drive capability and you are not using the vehicle in a race or competitive event. However, policy may be subject to a higher off-road excess.
My car is stolen even though it was locked. As it is not my fault, do I have to pay the excess and will this affect my No-Claim Discount (NCD)?
Excess will need to be paid for each claim you make under your policy. As we said earlier, NCD is affected only when we are unable to recover from the insurer of the guilty party. Hence, NCD will be affected but due consideration of the circumstances will be made whilst insuring your next car.
Is there an extra cost? The Insured, driver, and their family members in a vehicle will not fall under the definition of “third party” and hence cannot be eligible for any compensation in the event of an unforeseen accident. Hence this extension is useful as it provides no fault compensation to the innocent persons irrespective of who has caused the accident. Payment will be made even if compensation is received from other sources. The benefits are given in the scale attached to the policy with a maximum of RO 10,000 per person as per vehicle seating capacity. The premium for this extension is included in the price quoted to you for Comprehensive insurance.
The limits are set by the Ministry and is RO 75,000 for property damage and whatever is decided by the court for death/bodily injuries. Nevertheless under our Perfect and Executive plans, we have enhanced the property damage limits to RO 150,000 and RO 250,000 respectively at no additional cost.
If we are unable to recover the claim cost from a Third Party than unfortunately this will be treated like any accident and will affect your no claims bonus entitlement.
Due to a natural calamity like a flood or cyclone, my car is damaged. Will this affect my NCD or affect the rate on my next car?
This will not affect your NCD as long as you have not endangered yourself or others or your vehicle like driving through the wadi or flooded area. As mentioned earlier, our underwriters regularly review the pricing levels to ensure adequate balance between risk and returns.
